Partially cashing in on pre-E3 hype, Electronic Arts is releasing new details about three games that the company is developing in collaboration with famed director Stephen Spielberg. The company provided cryptic information about two of the titles Code named “LMNO” and “PQRS.” Official names and previews for the titles are expected to be released at E3 this week. Although Spielberg was not available for an interview, the director responsible for movies such as “Schindler’s List” and “Saving Private Ryan” described himself as a “gamer.” Spielberg said of the partnership, "I am truly enjoying the creative collaboration and we hope that gamers will be as excited as we are about what we can bring to the medium through our shared vision.”
“LMNO” is being developed for the PS3, Xbox 360, and PCs. Neil Young, an EA spokesman, said that “LMNO” will be a “contemporary action adventure” that focuses on the relationship between the player and a non-playable female character. Young claims that the female character will evolve over time depending on relational elements with the player. “LMNO” will be closer creatively to what movie-goers have come to expect from Spielberg.
The second title “PQRS” is a “block puzzle” game that is being developed exclusively for the Nintendo Wii. Purportedly, Spielberg was inspired to create the game after a Wii tennis match he played with “Mario” creator Shigeru Miyamoto last year at E3. Neil Young described Spielberg’s reaction to the match, "He came away just kind of blown away by the visceral nature of the machine." Young described “PQRS” as much more then a simple puzzle game. “Of course playing with blocks does not a game make,” stated Young. “Now imagine there are up to 50 different properties that can be associated with them. They can explode or form a chemical reaction.” Details were not provided about whether the game would be 2D or 3D based.
As of yet, release dates were not provided for either of the titles. However, EA stated that “PQRS” will be released this fiscal year which ends in March. The company confirmed that “LMNO” for the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC will not drop until at least the company’s next fiscal year. The third title in the collaboration is said to still be in the “idea” stage.
EA representative assured gamers that the titles would not be underdeveloped due to Spielberg’s lack of experience in game design. Young stated, “Steven respects games as a unique medium, and he understands very well what defines it, which is interactivity.” Young went on to say, “When Steven Spielberg introduces ideas that we collaborate on, they’re framed by an understanding that above all else, the experience has to remain interactive, and it has to remain compelling and fun.” Hands on experience may be the only way to measure the success of this partnership. After all, Spielberg has much to prove in the gaming realm. Seasoned gamers still have a bad taste in their mouths from the oft voted worst game of all time for the Atari 2600 “E.T.”
