Gamers love innovation. Without it, we’d still be playing the Atari 2600 versions of Pong and Space Invaders, and the very concept of industry tools like the Unreal Engine would be completely unheard of. So in that sense it comes as no surprise to hear XNA boss Chris Satchell claim that Microsoft has been taking stabs at 3D gaming.
Satchell believes the medium could find a place in gaming’s future, but warns that is infeasible at this point.
"We have done experiments with this at Microsoft and the results are extremely interesting," he told GamesIndustry.biz. "However, the current systems that work well require wearing active shutter glasses and I think it is hard to be mainstream with asking people to wear headgear to play games."
Satchell goes on to note that there are technologies being developed to circumvent the goofy glasses aspect of the experience, but it will be some time before such devices become commonplace. In the meantime you’ll just have to confine your gaming to two dimensions, you poor, mistreated souls.
