Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) announced yesterday that they will soon be rolling out a project called Shoot! (exclamation Sony’s). Starting November 13, PS3 and PSP owners will be able to download short films onto their consoles and handhelds. Initially, six well-known filmmakers each selected an up-and-coming director from their own country to craft a short film.
The big names will serve as executive producers on the shorts, as well as mentors for the emerging directors. A couple of the more well-known producers to my ears are Michael Winterbottom (Welcome to Sarajevo, 24 Hour Party People) and Jerry Bruckheimer (Beverly Hills Cop, Pirates of the Carribean, master of the explosion).
In addition to the film itself, each short will be accompanied by behind-the-scenes footage, interviews, and the pitches the directors gave to sell the concept of their movie. Shoot! is a great opportunity for both Sony and these new film makers. Sony expands it’s available multimedia content, and these directors get some added exposure. Perhaps some day this service can be expanded, and maybe full-length feature films will be exclusively released on the PS3. Would that even be a good thing? Let us know in the comments or forums.
