It is likely that every game in your collection was acquired through perfectly legal means. Be it buying a new or used copy from a store, ordering online, or simply trading with friends, most gamers secure their wares through perfectly legit means. That’s not the case with everyone however, which is what makes today’s story about a raid in Mexico such a big deal.
According to reports, the ESA, in conjunction with Mexican law enforcement officials, raided the San Juan de Dios Market in Guadalajara, Mexico, where they found a suprisingly large amount of illegal video game paraphernalia. Among the items seized were 91,200 illegal copies of games, 130,000 video game cover inserts, and 3,200 empty game boxes. There is no word on how many arrests were made, if any, or if any of the merchants face jail time for their actions.
ESA President Michael Gallagher praised the sting, stating: "Piracy in markets such as San Juan de Dios hurts businesses engaging in the legitimate distribution and retailing of computer and video games. We commend Mexican law enforcement officials for their actions in this raid and are committed to fully supporting authorities around the world who conduct these kinds of enforcement actions."
So all you merchants out there profiting on illegal game sales have been officially put on notice. The ESA is coming for you, and with raids of this size it sounds like they definitely mean business.
