In the music world, it’s rare to see a record producer give the thumbs up when their precious tunes are illegitimately sampled and remixed. The same isn’t true, apparently, in the world of video games, as Capcom is licensing a hip hop album based on sounds from Mega Man.
Random, an Arizona teacher and gamer turned rapper, is re-releasing "Mega Ran," his 2007 album that made waves in the underground and was featured in magazines such as Wired and Blender. This time, Capcom is giving its full support as part of the 20th anniversary of the famed video game character.
"I got an email from a Capcom representative when the word started spreading about Mega Ran, and I was immediately scared to death," Random told G4’s TheFeed. "But they were quick to tell me that they were very supportive of what I was doing … and best of all, that they weren’t gonna sue me!"
Random said getting the support from Mega Man’s creators was something he never imagined. The company also let him perform a song from "Mega Ran" in San Diego at Comic Con 2008.
Due to their good relationship, Random is now working with Capcom to produce "Mega Ran 9," which takes the music of that game for a new album.
"Mega Ran" is available on iTunes and "Mega Ran 9" will be released on February 2, 2009 by Capcom and RAHM Nation Records. The only bad thing to come of this? Unlike some underground records, like Danger Mouse’s "The Grey Album," you can’t get it for free.
