Microsoft announced today the Halo: Recut contest, which offers a chance for Halo fans to use their creativity to fill in the gaps of Master Chief’s story in whatever they choose. Want to blend Hollywood and Halo together in Master Chief’s “Meet the Parents?" Want to put a twist on the high school reunion routine by populating it with fellow Spartans? You could even let Master Chief really show his stuff by showing up MC Hammer’s moves. Those who make the most creative creation receive an all expenses paid trip to Los Angeles.
What Microsoft is asking for from its potential movie makers is to create their own original video featuring Master Chief outside of the Halo universe and put into a variety of different situations. These films can be made using a video camera, in game footage, animation, or top-of-the-line video editing software. It’s not the tool that it is important in this contest: it’s the mind behind it. Those who are interested in participating in the contest should visit the official site and post their videos anywhere from January 31 to March 2, 2008. The posted videos will be reviewed by a panel composed of experts from the video game industry.
One winner from each country will be choose and will receive an Xbox 360 console along with a copy of Halo 3. The winning video from each country will complete in a European final that will be reviewed by members of Bungie Studios. The final winner of this European contest will attend the New York Film Academy for one month to be taught the ins and outs of movie making. The winner will also receive a round trip transatlantic flights, accomodation, car rentals, and $2,000 cash.
Brian Jarrad of Bungie Studios stated that “this competition is a great way to showcase the creativity and passion that drives the Halo fan community. We can’t wait to see how people infuse their own style and personality into Master Chief and deliver a whole new take on the Halo phenomenon. May the best Spartan win!”
