Sony US VP of product marketing, Scott Steinberg, recently said that he believes one of the biggest games ever for Sony will be Resistance 2, expecting that it will reach similar popularity - even perhaps somehow surpassing, (gasp!) Gears of War 2.

Designed as a third-generation PS3 product, Resistance 2 is scheduled to ship in November. According to Steinberg, Resistance 1 sold one million units, and Ratchet and Clank followed suit last fall. Many gamers will most likely find that both games are worth playing. Reports have shows that Resistance 1 sold 2.5 million with a 10 million unit install base (as a bundled game), while Gears of War 1 sold 4.5 million, with an 18 million unit install base (as a singular unit).

It has also been noted that technically, the graphics margin between the two games has thinned significantly, and Resistance has nearly doubled its features. The guess is that Gears 2, however, won’t exactly be blind siding Resistance. A few people have expressed disappointment with Gears’ weapons, since the rifle useful so little of the time.

Quite a few agree that the Resistance weaponry is innovative, plentiful, and balanced, with great secondary fire modes. There is definitely the sense that having the ability to carry everything needed is an asset, in that deciding which weapons to use in specific areas, adds another layer of strategy and variety to the game play. Also, having new weapons on the second game play is an added bonus. Others point out, however, that the weapons were mostly automatic, with mere different ways to do damage, and not many status effects, reality warping, or game changing weapons.

The predictions by the gaming community are that Resistance 2 will sell 5 million units in Europe alone, and the same in the US, might be on target, given the recent eye candy screenshots released, featuring sizes of 5,000px by 3,000px. also available in as big as 10,000px by 5,000px.

Resistance fans are hoping that Sony amps up their ads for the game, since it seemed that Gears of War was much more heavily promoted than Resistance ever was. The fact remains, however, that since it did so well with so little advertising, it really says something about the quality of the game.

All in all, it should be interesting to see what happens, come November, when Resistance 2 arrives.
