Wallace & Gromit’s Grand Adventures: The Bogey Man has a story with equal elements of P.G Wodehouse and Indiana Jones. At the conclusion of the previous episode, Wallace mistakenly proposed marriage to his neighbor by simply holding up a lug nut to her. The last thing Wallace wants is holy matrimony, so he must break the engagement with his trusty canine partner Gromit. What follows is the rebuffing of unwanted marriage and the hidden object to help in rebuffing. Not a novel plot, but certainly an entertaining one.
The game’s graphics uphold Telltale quality, though clay is not the most expressive medium. Mouths don’t sync perfectly when a character is crying or laughing. However, the colors, character designs, and environments round out visuals nicely. When it comes to graphical quality, Telltale never disappoints.
As with previous Wallace and Gromit games, the audio also carries its weight. The whole voice cast reprises along with a new character, and the actors nicely capturing their character’s personalities. Gromit’s animation impressively makes him more expressive with his eyes then other characters are with their voices. The sound effects and background music are also a good example of Telltale work, so anything coming into players’ auditory canals will not disappoint.
Telltale continues to provide entertaining and challenging puzzles which have divinable solutions. However, I did hit puzzles where I could see the solution, but couldn’t find how to do it. Solutions make sense in hindsight, so it’s all about getting and keeping a groove. The hint system saves those who become absolutely stuck. Players won’t find too much head scratching here, and thankfully will never need to reach for a pad and pencil.
Bogey Man is a nice cap to the first season of Wallace & Gromit’s Grand Adventures. It doesn’t bring anything new, but that isn’t needed. Players that have enjoyed the season so far will enjoy this as well. This episode is bittersweet, but next month isn’t too far away.
