Game of the Year Debate: Skyrim vs. Arkham City

Catwoman perched - from Batman: Arkham City

Hey everyone, my name is Austin Bumpus, aka JimmerCrackCorn, and I would like to introduce myself to you all with this first article of mine. For a little information about myself, I am a journalist who writes about sports and video games. I am also a YouTube gaming commentator, where I make videos of me playing random games, and doing some gaming reviews. I am excited to be writing this. So in this article I am going to be talking about two of the big games from 2011, Batman: Arkham City and Skyrim, and the “debate” I guess you could call it between the two games for the Game of the Year honor. I for one have played both of these games and believe they are both great games. I think that they both have the possibility or potential to be the game of the year for 2011.

I’ll start by going over Arkham City, which was probably the best action game of 2011. The game had an amazing storyline that played as a great sequel to Arkham Asylum with a wide variety of challenges and characters to help boost the plot of the story. The player could play as Batman or Catwoman fighting crime against villains like the Joker, Penguin, Two Face, Mr. Freeze, Clayface, Ras Al Gaul, and Hugo Strange. With great graphics along with perfect voice acting from Mark Hamill as the Joker, and Kevin Conroy as Batman, the game hit the spot on so many different levels. It has enough content in the game for it to be played for a long time without it getting boring. The creators have already released multiple DLC packs, with Robin and Nightwing, who can be used in the challenge maps that can be unlocked through the campaign or even downloaded. The game has many great aspects to it, creating a lot of reasons why it could be voted as the Game of the Year for 2011.

Then there’s the other big release of 2011… no, not Call of Duty or Battlefield (which could be a debate for another article). The game I’m talking about is The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. One of the obvious candidates for Game of the Year, Skyrim is no doubt the best RPG game in the past few years with a great campaign and an endless amount of side missions that provide countless hours of gameplay. The province of Skyrim is huge, with many different towns to travel to or free roam in. There are many intriguing aspects to the game, such as selling/buying weapons, apparel, potions, etc., building weapons, owning a house, getting married, etc. Although the game doesn’t have any DLC yet like Arkham City, there really isn’t anything that needs to be added to the game as it seems perfect just as it is. Skyrim, which did win many game of the year awards just a month after its release, goes right up there with Arkham City for Game of the Year.

These two games will go down in history as two of the biggest releases and two of the best video games in 2011, and even in the entire history of gaming. They both have arguments for game of the year of 2011, and I want to hear your arguments for what game you think is the best game of 2011. Is it Arkham City or Skyrim? Or is it another game that has been overshadowed, like Portal 2 or Battlefield 3. Feel free to post in the forum with your thoughts about this debate and thanks for reading!
